If a house is in foreclosure, how long can it be there ... - Zillow Real ...

Hi Jessica,

Dawgs is correct. It could be a short period or a very long time. ?A lot depends on the laws of your state and the mortgage holder.

Here, in Michigan, there is a six month redemption period where the home owner has the opportunity to purchase the house back after the Sheriff sale. The home owner can stay in the house for free (except utilities) for six months. If the owner doesn't leave after that, there is the eviction process which can take another two to eight weeks. After the house is vacated, it could take the mortgage holder several months to list the property.

In some states the home owner can be evicted the day of the Sheriff sale and the home can be listed the same day.

You might want to contact an attorney or a local realtor to see what the laws are for your area and what they have to say about the process.

Good luck ...
