Koran Tempo, Page A7 (2)

The Ministry of Education and Culture?s Director General of Elementary Education, Suyanto, said there is an urgent need to improve the country?s math teachers? capacity given the poor math exam results shown by many students participating in the recent national exam for junior high school (UN SMP). About 10% out of 15,945 students who failed in the UN had flunked the math test. Most of these students are from Central Java (173), West Kalimantan (143) and West Sumatra (95). The UN results helped the government with the mapping and planning for improvement measures, Suyanto said.

Meanwhile, Sulistiyo, chairman of the Teachers Association of the Republic of Indonesia (PGRI), said the mapping should be done thoroughly to cover not only teacher quality, but also exam material difficulty, school facility adequateness and student capacity. He said the current teacher competency assessment program is inadequate to identify weaknesses in the teachers? competence. Therefore, the government should come up with a better and complete teacher competency mapping that schools can use as reference to improve quality of their teaching staff, he said.
